According to its background, the province was cut off from Kompong Speu and Kompot province in the year 1945 by King Norodom Sihanouk. And the city's creation is to commemorate the achievements of Norodom Sihanouk. The original name of Preah Sihanouk was Kampong Som.
For geographical location, Sihanoukville is bordered by Kampong Speu, Koh Kong, Kampot and between Thailand and Vietnam. The province is about 227km from Phnom Penh Capital, from the Lion II (Preah Sihanouk) to Wat Phnom (Phnom Penh), along National Road 4.
